Surfer Privacy Policy
Last updated: 18 October 2026
In short: Surfer does not collect or share any personal data. Your favourite spots and logged sessions are stored on your device and in your own private iCloud, which only you can access. There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking.
Who we are
Surfer is an iPhone app for windsurfers and surfers that shows the wind, weather and forecast for any spot you choose. It is made by Ron Kjernell, Zenscape ("we", "us").
Your location
If you allow it, Surfer uses your device's location only to show where you are on the map, so you can quickly pick a nearby spot. Your location is not sent to us and is not stored by the app. You can turn location access off at any time in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Surfer. The app works fully without it: you can search for a place or tap the map instead.
Weather (Apple Weather)
To show the wind and weather, Surfer asks Apple's weather service (WeatherKit) for the forecast at the position of the spot you are looking at, your favourite spots, and the time and place of sessions you log. These positions are sent to Apple to get the weather; we do not receive them. Apple's handling of this information is described in Apple's Privacy Policy and on the Apple Weather data sources page.
Place search and maps (Apple)
To search for places, show maps, look up the name of a spot you tap on the map and suggest which way a beach faces, Surfer uses Apple's built-in map services (MapKit). The search text or map position is sent to Apple to get the result. We do not receive this information.
Favourites, spot profiles and sessions
Spots you save, their profiles (beach direction, good wind directions, notes) and the sessions you log (time, gear, rating, notes and the weather at the time) are stored on your device. If you use iCloud, Surfer also keeps a copy in your own private iCloud (Apple CloudKit), so it stays in sync on your devices and comes back if you reinstall the app or get a new device. This copy is stored in your iCloud account, counts towards your iCloud storage and cannot be accessed by us or anyone else. You can delete it by deleting the app's data in Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Manage Storage, or by turning off iCloud for Surfer.
Your settings (wind unit and wind range) are stored on your device only.
Widgets and wind alerts
Surfer's widgets get your favourites and settings from the app on your device and fetch the weather from Apple in the same way as the app. Wind alerts are local notifications scheduled by your device; nothing is sent to a server. To keep alerts up to date, iOS may let Surfer check the forecast in the background now and then.
What we don't do
- We don't collect any personal data, and we have no servers that receive data from the app.
- We don't use analytics, crash-reporting or advertising services.
- We don't track you across apps or websites, and we don't sell or share data with anyone.
- The app requires no account or sign-in of its own.
Children
Surfer does not collect personal data from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If the app ever changes in a way that affects your privacy (for example, if it starts using another weather service), we will update this page and the date at the top before the change is released.
