What Zenhour does
- Golden hour, blue hour, sunrise and sunset for where you are, or any place you search for, on any date.
- A day chart of the sun's path: tap it or drag sideways to explore the light through the day.
- Where the sun and moon are: a map with lines towards sunrise, sunset, moonrise and moonset from your exact spot, plus a compass arrow that points to the sun when you're on location.
- The moon: today's phase, moonrise and moonset, and the next full and new moon.
- Saved spots and plans: save your favourite locations and plan a shoot, like "Sunset at the lake on Saturday".
- Reminders before a planned moment: from "when it starts" up to a day before, or at a time you choose.
- Widgets for the home screen and lock screen with a live countdown to the next golden or blue hour, and the moon's phase.
Getting started
- Open Zenhour and allow location access to see the light where you are, or tap the place name at the top to search for any place.
- Pick a date with the date button at the top right.
- Tap a moment, like Sunset, then "Plan sunset" to save it and get a reminder.
- Add a widget: touch and hold your home screen or lock screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and search for Zenhour.
Questions
What exactly are golden hour and blue hour in Zenhour?
They're based on how high the sun is. Golden hour is when the sun is between 6° above and 4° below the horizon: warm, low light with long shadows. Blue hour is when the sun is between 4° and 6° below the horizon: soft, even blue light. Golden hour therefore continues a little after sunset and starts a little before sunrise.
Why do my times differ slightly from another app?
Apps use different definitions of golden and blue hour (see above), so the start and end times can differ by several minutes. Zenhour's sun times are calculated on your device and are accurate to within about a minute. Moonrise and moonset are accurate to within a few minutes.
Whose time zone are the times in?
Times are always shown in the local time of the place you're looking at. If you search for Tokyo, you see Tokyo's clock times, wherever you are.
It says my location isn't available.
Location access is probably turned off for Zenhour. Tap "Open Settings" in the app, or go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Zenhour and choose "While Using the App". You can also simply search for a place instead.
The widget says "Open Zenhour and allow location".
Widgets ask for location access separately from the app. When you add a Zenhour widget, iOS asks whether its widgets may use your location: choose Allow. If you said no, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Zenhour and make sure location access is allowed, then remove the widget and add it again.
I didn't get a reminder.
- Check that notifications are on: Settings > Notifications > Zenhour.
- If a plan was made too late for its reminder (for example a "4 h before" reminder for a moment that starts in one hour), the plan shows "Reminder passed" and no reminder can be sent.
- Focus modes and Do Not Disturb can hold back notifications.
Does Zenhour work far north or south?
Yes. During midsummer nights and polar days and nights, golden or blue hour can last for hours or all day, and the sun or moon may not rise or set at all. Zenhour shows this instead of inventing times.
Do you collect my data?
No. Your location, saved spots, plans and reminders stay on your device. See the privacy policy for details.
